Toothache Call your dentist as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. Meanwhile, give your child the appropriate "pain-killing" medications. Do not place the medication on your child's tooth or gum, as this could cause chemical burns. Keep the tooth clean by brushing it with warm water.
Broken Tooth If possible, locate the broken or dislodged segment of the tooth and place in a cup of water. Take this and your child to the dentist as soon as possible. Until your child can be treated, keep the tooth clean. Rinse with warm water. Avoid hot or cold food and drink.
Broken braces and Wires If a wire is "sticking" the cheek or gum, place beeswax or moist cotton over the offending portion until your dentist can correct the problem. If a wire becomes dislodged from the braces and is irritating the gum, clip it away from the braces by using fingernail clippers. Contact your dentist as soon as possible.
Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek Stop bleeding by applying pressure to the wound. Use gauze or a clean cloth. Keep the wound clean. Rinse with warm salt water twice daily. Call your dentist for an appointment if the injury seems severe.
Knocked Out Permanent Tooth For your child's sake, try to remain calm. Find the tooth; gently wash it with water, but do not scrub it. If possible, place the tooth back into its socket. If this is not possible, place the tooth in a cup of milk. If milk is not readily available, place it in a cup of water. Take it and your child to the dentist as soon as possible.
